Columbia River Shoreline Cleanup Project

COLUMBIA RIVER SHORELINE CLEANUP PROJECT completed!

We are pleased to announce the successful completion of this project. It took 1,533 volunteer hours over two years to remove 76 car wrecks, 53,000 kgs of metal waste and 3,600+ kgs of non-metal garbage from the shoreline of the river from the City of Trail south to the international border.

All the material was removed from Crown and municipal land under the required permits. The metal waste was recycled and the garbage was either recycled or disposed of in the local landfill.

Although the public-land portion of the project is now complete, the club hopes to partner with local landowners to continue shoreline cleanup efforts in the future.

This was one of the more costly of our projects to date - the club was the major funder - but it was money well spent on improving the riparian habitat along the river and bringing together the local community in cleaning up our own backyard.

In addition to our hard-working volunteers, the club gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the City of Trail, Director Ali Grieve of RDKB Electoral Area 'A', and Linda Worley of RDKB Electoral Area 'B' / Lower Columbia-Old Glory. We also thank Local Industrial Partners, BV Tool Rentals and Hilltech Contracting, for donating the use of their equipment.

Just goes to show what the vision of two people and community support can accomplish!

Before

After

The club’s newest project is expected to make a significant difference to the aesthetics and wildlife habitat of the Lower Columbia River shoreline from Sunningdale to the US border. Everything from car bodies to the kitchen sink will be removed piece by piece, if required. Some work has been undertaken but there is much more still to be done. There are costs associated with this project and, as with all club projects, funding will come from the club’s coffers and, hopefully, from regional grant administering organizations. We have however, received interest from members of the public to make donations to the project. We will gladly accept donations and they can be made by cheque or e- transfer. Information for both can be found at the bottom of this post.

Please be aware that the club is a not-for-profit society and not a charitable organization. As such we cannot issue tax receipts for donations.

The work is generally done during low water levels, so late winter and early spring. Look to this website for more information on the scope of the work and volunteering as we get closer to low water levels.
